A Relaxing Escape to Roatán, Honduras
A Travel Note from Katie of Atelier Interior Design
Every now and then, stepping away from the studio and into a completely different environment is exactly what a designer needs. For Katie, a recent trip to the island of Roatán provided just that — a week of relaxation, beautiful scenery, and a few unforgettable firsts.
Located off the northern coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, Roatán is known for its crystal-clear water, vibrant reefs, and laid-back island atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, days are spent outdoors, and the biggest decision is often whether to head to the beach or the water first.
Katie and her husband stayed at Ibagari Boutique Hotel, a beautifully designed boutique hotel known for its stunning ocean views and relaxed elegance. The property sits right along the shoreline, creating an intimate atmosphere that blends natural beauty with thoughtful design details. For someone who spends her days immersed in interiors, the hotel’s calm aesthetic and connection to the surrounding landscape made it an especially inspiring place to stay.
One of the highlights of the trip was trying something completely new: scuba diving. Roatán sits along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest coral reef system in the world — making it one of the most renowned diving destinations in the Caribbean. For their first dive experience, Katie and her family explored the underwater world together, discovering vibrant coral, tropical fish, and the incredible calm that comes with being beneath the surface.
Beyond the water, the entire week was defined by relaxation. Days were spent enjoying the sunshine, exploring the island’s easygoing town centers, and embracing the slower pace that Roatán naturally encourages. The local food scene was another highlight of the trip, with fresh seafood and flavorful Caribbean dishes that made every meal memorable.
What stood out most to Katie was the island’s overall atmosphere. Roatán has a relaxed, welcoming energy that makes it feel both adventurous and peaceful at the same time. The towns are lively but never overwhelming, and the combination of natural beauty and friendly culture creates an environment that’s easy to fall in love with.
Like many travel experiences, the trip also offered subtle inspiration. New places, colors, textures, and landscapes often influence how designers see the world, and eventually how they design spaces for their clients.
For Katie, Roatán was exactly what a getaway should be: a beautiful setting, new experiences, incredible food, and a chance to fully unwind.
Sometimes the best inspiration comes from simply slowing down.
