A Designer’s Guide to New York City
Where to stay, sip, shop, and stroll
There’s no one right way to experience New York City—that’s part of the charm. On each visit, we try new restaurants, stay in new hotels, and take different routes through our favorite neighborhoods. This guide is a collection of recent favorites that blend thoughtful design, local flavor, and just the right amount of adventure.
Where to Stay
Freehand Hotel – NoMad
Designed by Roman and Williams, the Freehand is full of layered, artistic details that bring the interiors to life. Each room features custom art by Bard College students and alumni, and the hotel itself houses five different restaurants and bars, each with its own distinct vibe. The location—just far enough from Times Square—is ideal if you’re planning to catch a show but want a neighborhood that feels stylish and walkable.
Park Terrace Hotel – Bryant Park
If you’re looking for something calm and central, this spot is a gem. Situated right on Bryant Park, the rooms are surprisingly spacious, and the rooftop patio and restaurant are perfect for a post-city-stroll unwind. The design is simple, serene, and refreshingly understated—with excellent service to match.
Where to Eat + Drink
Daddies (Greenwich Village)
Cozy, handmade Italian that feels like you’ve stepped into a friend’s kitchen—if your friend has impeccable taste. The vibe is casual and welcoming, with food that keeps you lingering for hours.
Barrow’s Pub
Right across the street from Daddies, this charming little dive bar is perfect for a pre-dinner drink. Friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, and ideal for resting your feet after a full day of wandering.
Ampersand
A moody, late-night cocktail bar tucked around the corner from Barrow’s. Great drinks, better ambiance.
Celon Lounge (Bryant Park Hotel)
A garden-level Moroccan-inspired bar with gorgeous lighting and unforgettable cocktails. Tucked beneath The Bryant Park Hotel, it’s the perfect nightcap.
Time Out Market – Dumbo, Brooklyn
With jaw-dropping views of the city skyline, this multi-vendor food hall offers something for everyone. From BBQ to cocktails, the vibe is lively and the setting is unbeatable.
Chelsea Market + Corkbuzz
You can’t visit Chelsea without a stop at the Market. After shopping and exploring, head to Corkbuzz—a wine bar with a beautifully curated list and great small plates.
What to Do
Wander. A lot.
The best way to experience NYC is on foot. Expect to hit 20K steps (minimum) as you bounce between iconic neighborhoods like SoHo, Nolita, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, Meatpacking, Gramercy Park, Bryant Park, East Village, and West Village. Don’t overthink it—just start walking.
See a Show
Most recently, we saw Buena Vista Social Club, which brought the house down and earned five Tony Awards. A must if you’re a fan of music, dance, or joy in general.
Visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum
Moving, memorable, and essential. A powerful tribute worth making time for.
Explore the High Line + Little Island
Take in the landscape architecture, public art, and fresh air. Little Island, a floating park near Pier 55, is a must-see for design lovers.
The Whitney Museum of American Art
Always inspiring. We caught the Amy Sherald exhibit (known for her portrait of Michelle Obama), and it was a stunning example of thoughtful, intentional work.
Comedy Cellar
Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, this legendary spot hosts intimate shows with some of the best comedians in the industry. Book ahead—it’s a New York institution for a reason.
Printemps New York
The new French department store is a visual feast. Equal parts luxury, whimsy, and high-end retail therapy.
Dumbo, Brooklyn
Quaint, scenic, and full of charm. The views of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge make it a perfect half-day adventure.
New York is a city that doesn’t stand still—and that’s exactly why we keep going back. Whether you’re walking the High Line, sipping wine in Chelsea, or discovering a new boutique in SoHo, there’s always something inspiring just around the corner.
